Connecticut mattress disposal rules

- Connecticut mattress stewardship program (Public Act 13-42, first in US) run by MRC/Bye Bye Mattress. Residents discard mattresses at no cost via 135+ drop-off sites; 157 communities offer access via transfer stations, public works yards or curbside; 13 towns hold seasonal collection events. Municipal participation is voluntary, so local access varies. Source
- Connecticut recycling fee rises to $19.50 per mattress and foundation sold for use in CT on October 1, 2026 (announced July 1, 2026). Prior fee reported as $16.00 per unit since January 1, 2025. Source
- CT DEEP page (last updated March 2024): point-of-sale fee has funded the program since May 1, 2015; the state does not administer the program or control funds; CGS 22a-905c has DEEP evaluate it. Page calls mattresses problematic for landfills/incinerators but states no disposal ban. Source
