Salt Lake City’s own collection service takes the mattress from outside your home. You normally have to book a date in advance and follow their wrapping rules.
Salt Lake City Call 2 Haul bulk waste collection
Salt Lake City residents who receive waste collection services from the Salt Lake City Waste & Recycling Division, which the City says includes single-family homes and most duplexes and triplexes. The resident needs a Salt Lake City Public Utilities account number to book.
Conditions and source
Two scheduled collections a year, one for bulky items and one for green waste, each requested by the resident. Mattresses, box springs and bed foundations are all accepted; the City asks that mattresses be kept clean and dry because clean mattresses are recycled at Springback while soiled or wet ones are landfilled. The pile should be about 8 feet wide and 4 feet deep and must not go out more than 24 hours before the confirmed date; collection runs 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Leave 10 feet clear either side and stay 5 feet from hydrants, trees, poles, mailboxes and walls. Larger volumes are sent to the landfill or a private hauler instead. Book through the online form, by phone or by email.

Most charities will not take a used mattress. These are the ones we checked, including the ones that say no.
