Curbside or inside pickup; stairs and long carries cost extra. The price is a pickup fee plus a recycling fee on each piece, so it is a starting price rather than a rate per mattress, and a second piece collected on the same visit costs less than the first. Decatur’s own collection service takes the mattress from outside your home. You normally have to book a date in advance and follow their wrapping rules.

Decatur curbside bulky-item collection (city sanitation)

destination not stated

Single-family residential households served by the City of Decatur's own sanitation crews (the City's page describes "Single-family residential garbage, yard waste, and recycling collection service" on four service days, and code Sec. 82-38(b) says "All areas are serviced by the city"). It is not DeKalb County's service: the City tells residents to disregard the County's notices.

This year’s was on Jul 1, 2026 — it has already happened, and the town has not published next year’s date yet.

Conditions and source

"Bulky items like furniture and appliances are accepted free of charge as a part of regular sanitation pick-up." The Pay As You Throw page says the annual sanitation fee pays for bulky item collections; the fee was $350 and rose to $360 per household on July 1, 2026. Items must be at the curb by 7:30 a.m. on the collection day (code 82-34(e)), and "Yard trimmings, furniture and appliances shall be placed at the curb as close as practical to the next collection day"; large items such as furniture go "separately from yard trimmings and metal appliances" (82-32(2)). A $50 fee applies to items containing freon, and up to four tires are collected with regular service. The code separately says discarded furniture and appliances from private property are collected "on a special fee basis" (82-34(b)(5), 82-37). A mattress is not named on the City's page or in the cleanup lists.

Not confirmed: A mattress is not named as accepted or refused on the City's collection page; it is not stated that a mattress counts as furniture.

Not confirmed: The code authorizes a special fee for discarded furniture from private property while the web page says bulky items are free with regular service; no schedule reconciling them was found, so no price is recorded for a mattress.

Not confirmed: No limit per collection is published, and no booking step is described.

Not confirmed: DeKalb County lists Decatur among the cities it serves; the City's page describes its own service. Not reconciled.

Not confirmed: No disposal or recycling outcome is stated.

DeKalb County curbside bulky item collection (mattresses and box springs)

destination not stated

Customers of the DeKalb County Department of Solid Waste Management only, which is not everyone in the county. The department states it serves "unincorporated DeKalb County and the cities of Brookhaven, Decatur, Dunwoody, Lithonia, Pine Lake, Stonecrest, Stone Mountain, and Tucker" — eight cities and the unincorporated remainder. Doraville is not on that list, nor are Chamblee, Clarkston, Avondale Estates or the DeKalb part of Atlanta, and a household in those places must use its own city's arrangement. A fee applies: the page heads the list "Bulky Items (Fee Required)", staff assess the items on site, and "Pay before collection occurs".

Conditions and source

Mattresses and box springs are named examples of a bulky item, alongside furniture, toilets and bathroom fixtures, and appliances. The order of operations is unusual and matters: items go to the curb first, then the request is submitted — online, by email to solidwaste@dekalbcountyga.gov with name, address, a description and photographs, or in person at 3720 Leroy Scott Drive, Decatur, GA 30032, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., 404-294-2900. Assessment follows in one to three business days, payment is made if a fee applies, and collection happens "within 10 business days of request"; weather and holiday weeks may stretch that. Items must sit neatly at the curb, not on the pavement or roadway, clear of mailboxes, flower beds, utilities and drainage. Appliances must be emptied and have doors removed. The heavier Special Collection tier — construction and demolition materials, fencing, tree parts over 3 inches, commingled piles, evictions, contractor waste, unflattened cardboard — is prepaid at $115 minimum or $258.80 per truckload, rising to $230 and $517.50 for tree parts and commingled piles. Refused entirely: tires, hazardous materials, concrete products, Bagster bags and liquids.

Not confirmed: The fee for an ordinary bulky item such as a mattress is nowhere published. The page says only that a fee is required and that staff set it after assessment; the printed figures belong to the Special Collection tier. An unpublished fee is not a free one.

Not confirmed: Nothing says what happens to a collected mattress, so the outcome is unknown rather than disposal.

1225 Columbia Dr, Decatur, GA 30032 · recycling

Open to residents and businesses: the fee page prices both and states no residency rule. Appointments are required.

Conditions and source

By appointment only, Wednesdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; closed October 22, November 25 (early), 26 to November 28, 24 to December 28, December 31 and January 1. "Home mattresses and box springs" are charged "$15 TWIN/FULL; $18 QUEEN/KING PER MATTRESS OR BOX SPRING", the same for residents and businesses, and the page links a "MATTRESS RECYCLING VIDEO". The same non-profit's mattress post, recorded for CHaRM Atlanta, accepts spring mattresses only and refuses foam, foam toppers and wet or heavily soiled mattresses.

  • $15 — Twin and full mattresses and box springs, each, at CHaRM DeKalb ("$15 TWIN/FULL ... PER MATTRESS OR BOX SPRING"); the same for residents and businesses. Appointment required.
  • $18 — Queen and king mattresses and box springs, each, at CHaRM DeKalb ("$18 QUEEN/KING PER MATTRESS OR BOX SPRING"); the same for residents and businesses. Appointment required.

Not confirmed: The fee page does not distinguish the two sites; it is not stated in so many words that DeKalb charges the same as Atlanta, though the page says it lists items accepted at either.

Seminole Road Landfill — household self-haul

4203 Clevemont Road, Ellenwood, GA 30294 · 4 miles away · disposal

No residency rule is published on either the fee sheet or the bulky-item page; the department calls Seminole Road its "Public disposal facility" and offers it as a "Self-haul option for residents", while describing its Central, East and North transfer stations as commercial disposal sites. The animal crematory on the same fee sheet does distinguish DeKalb residents from non-residents, so the county knows how to write a residency rule and has not written one for the landfill gate.

Conditions and source

4203 Clevemont Road, Ellenwood, GA 30294, 404-687-4040. Open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Charging is by weight at the scale, not per item: municipal disposal is $95.00 a ton and the minimum scale fee is $48.00 for any material up to 999 pounds, so one mattress costs $48 unless it travels with a heavier load. Construction and demolition material, yard trimmings, trees, inert materials, industrial and commercial waste are all $95 a ton. Residential tires are $10 each and no commercial tires are taken; an appliance containing Freon is $48. Asbestos and large animals carry a $200 hole-preparation charge plus tonnage. The county's own bulky-item page points households here as the alternative to a fee-based curbside collection, noting "Pay-per-weight pricing" and that construction materials are accepted.

Not confirmed: The $48 minimum comes from the county's April 2026 fee sheet; the bulky-item page cites a gate minimum of $16.50 and $99.80 per ton in its dead-animal paragraph. The two are not reconciled anywhere on the county site.

Not confirmed: No mattress-specific rate is published, and nothing says whether bedding is recycled; a landfill gate implies disposal and no recovery is claimed.

6Donation options in Decatur

Most charities will not take a used mattress. These are the ones we checked, including the ones that say no.

  • The Salvation Army (satruck.org): accepted-items list includes 'Mattresses' and beds; also says local ordinances and need vary by location and to call 1-800-SA-TRUCK to confirm what a local center accepts. Source
  • Doesn’t take mattresses. Habitat for Humanity national ReStore guide: 'Mattresses and box springs are not accepted.' Source

Policies vary by branch. Call before you carry one over — we asked each of the big three directly: Goodwill, the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity.

What Decatur itself says

What we established about this city in particular — including where it runs nothing of its own and residents have to look elsewhere.

  • Sources disagree: Two official pages disagree about who collects a mattress in Decatur, and which one is right changes both who a resident rings and whether they pay. DeKalb County's Department of Solid Waste Management names Decatur as one of its customer cities in its own words: it serves "unincorporated DeKalb County and the cities of Brookhaven, Decatur, Dunwoody, Lithonia, Pine Lake, Stonecrest, Stone Mountain, and Tucker", and its Bulky Items page heads the list "Bulky Items (Fee Required)", names "Mattresses and box springs" on it, assesses the item on site and takes payment before collection. The City of Decatur, on the other hand, publishes its own sanitation service on four collection days from Public Works at 2635 Talley St., and its Pay As You Throw page states that "Residents pay a nominal annual fee for trash, yard waste, recyclables, bulky item collections, and street sweeping" - a fee rising from $350 to $360 a household on July 1, 2026. On that reading a Decatur household's bulky collection is already paid for and the county's fee does not arise. Neither page mentions the other, and nothing published says whether DeKalb operates the route Decatur bills for, whether the county's service-area list is out of date, or whether the two run in parallel. Both routes are listed on this page for that reason. A Decatur resident should start with the city, because the city is the body that bills them and names bulky collection in what the bill buys. Source Not confirmed: Whether DeKalb County Solid Waste operates the bulky collection that Decatur's annual fee pays for, or runs a separate chargeable route alongside it, is published nowhere. Not confirmed: No figure is published for an ordinary bulky item on the county route: the county's fee table begins at the heavier Special Collection tier ($115 minimum), so what a Decatur household would be charged if the county route applied could not be established.
  • Decatur's Pay As You Throw page says what the annual fee buys: "Residents pay a nominal annual fee for trash, yard waste, recyclables, bulky item collections, and street sweeping." So bulky-item collection is part of the annual sanitation fee and is not billed per pickup, and the only per-use charge is the PAYT bag ("Residents purchase special PAYT trash bags from local stores and markets"; the price per pack of ten includes the bag, sales tax and landfill tipping fee). Current bag prices on the Solid Waste Collection page: 8-gallon $4.86, 15-gallon $8.64, 33-gallon $18.36 per ten-pack. Source Not confirmed: The page does not name a mattress among the bulky items. Not confirmed: No allowance or limit on bulky items is published, so 'included in the annual fee' cannot be read as 'unlimited'.
  • A May 1, 2026 City release says the single-family residential sanitation fee "will increase from $350 to $360 per household for the upcoming fiscal year", approved by the City Commission on March 2 and effective July 1, 2026, funding "pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) garbage collection, yard waste pickup, commingled recycling, and separate glass recycling" and community services including electronics recycling, document shredding and "neighborhood cleanup events". PAYT bag prices and commercial fees stay the same. Households with the S-2 homestead exemption keep fee offsets for solid waste and stormwater. The release does not mention bulky items. Source Not confirmed: The release says nothing about bulky-item collection or mattresses.
  • Decatur holds an annual Neighborhood Cleanup event, each street assigned one Saturday. The spring 2026 cleanup days began on March 7, 2026. Per the City's page: "Residents can dispose of bulky materials during the annual Neighborhood Cleanup event", items are to be "placed at the curb no later than 7:30 am", and "Items set out later risk not being collected". Acceptable items: "Yard trimmings & building materials not from the work of private contractors", "Tires", "Furniture", "Appliances not containing Freon" and "Trash not normally placed in pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) bags". Not collected: liquids, dirt, bricks and blocks, stone, rocks or concrete, and motor vehicle batteries or parts. A mattress is on neither list. Source Not confirmed: A mattress is named neither as accepted nor as refused in the cleanup lists; 'Furniture' is the only nearby category. Not confirmed: The 2027 cleanup dates are not published on the page reviewed.
  • Decatur's Code of Ordinances, Chapter 82 (Solid Waste), sets the rules. Sec. 82-34(e): the occupant must put containers out "at or before 7:30 a.m. or prior to the arrival of the collectors", not "before 5:00 p.m. on the day prior to collection day", and "Yard trimmings, furniture and appliances shall be placed at the curb as close as practical to the next collection day"; 82-34(f) requires containers removed "not later than 12:00 midnight on the day the contents are collected". Sec. 82-32(2): "large items such as furniture shall be set on the curb separately from yard trimmings and metal appliances". Sec. 82-33(g): a commercial container holding "Bed springs and mattresses" (among furniture, appliances, tires and other items) "shall not be emptied until such items are removed", the only place the code names a mattress. Sec. 82-34(b)(5) says "The city shall not be responsible for collecting or hauling discarded building material, dirt, rock or discarded furniture and appliances from private property" and heads the paragraph "Collection on special fee basis"; Sec. 82-37 says when the sanitation director authorizes collection of refuse that does not meet the chapter's standards the special charge is "based upon the actual time required at the rate as set forth in the schedule of fees and charges" and is a lien on the property. Sec. 82-38(b): "It shall be a violation of this chapter for any person, not approved by the city, to collect and haul any refuse or recyclables other than that arising from said person's own accumulation. All areas are serviced by the city." Sec. 82-3: any violation is punishable "according to the provisions of section 1-12". The litter article's Sec. 82-55(c) adds cost recovery for removal, discretionary court-ordered clean-up of up to one mile of road and publication of the offender's name, and likewise sets the punishment by section 1-12. Inspectors may issue a summons to municipal court (82-2). Source Not confirmed: The fine and jail term in Sec. 1-12 were not read, so no dumping penalty figure is given. Not confirmed: The code speaks of a 'special fee basis' for discarded furniture from private property, while the City's web page says bulky items are collected free with regular sanitation; the schedule of fees and charges that would reconcile them was not found. Not confirmed: The code sets no limit on how many bulky items a household may put out.
  • Not an option: Atlanta Habitat for Humanity's ReStore donation page lists "Mattresses & Box Springs*" under "Items That We DO NOT Accept" (the asterisk: "Conditional acceptance is possible if the item is BRAND NEW ONLY"), and adds elsewhere: "we are unable to accept non-working appliances, used batteries, electronics, florescent lighting, mattresses, or paint". Its two ReStores are at 271 Chester Ave SE, Atlanta, GA 30316 and 5626 Old National Hwy, College Park, GA 30349, open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Atlanta Habitat, not Decatur Area Habitat, which is a different organization in Alabama.) A used mattress will be turned away. Source Not confirmed: Whether a brand-new mattress is accepted is left to a call to the store.
  • Not an option: Goodwill of North Georgia's "Items We Do and Don't Accept" page lists "Mattresses" and "Box springs" under "ITEMS WE CANNOT ACCEPT", alongside bedframes, cribs, car seats, water-soaked or stained items and large appliances. A used mattress will be turned away at its donation centers. Source

What DeKalb County offers

Established for the county as a whole, so it applies across Decatur and its neighbors.

  • For the month of October 2026 only, DeKalb County will collect a mattress from the curb free and without a request. Its Fall 2026 SWEEP frequently-asked-questions sheet describes the Solid Waste Environmental Enhancement Program as including "free curbside residential bulky item collection", running "The entire month of October", with "Bulky item collection will occur within DSWM's entire service area" — that is, unincorporated DeKalb and the eight cities the department serves, not Doraville. Mattresses are named among the accepted items: "Furniture (chairs, tables, sofas, mattresses, dressers, cabinets); appliances...; electronics...; other items such as lawn mowers...; lawn furniture; toys; bicycles; toilets; playground equipment." Refused are riding lawn mowers, pianos, auto parts, household hazardous waste, medical waste, tires and special collection items. No booking is needed: "Items at the curb will automatically be collected, based on the schedule above." The schedule follows the household's normal service day — Monday customers Oct. 2 or 3, Tuesday customers Oct. 9 or 10, Wednesday customers Oct. 16 or 17, Thursday customers Oct. 23 or 24 — with items put out on the Thursday of the week they are served, in an accessible spot clear of hydrants and mailboxes. The sheet closes the loophole a reader might hope for: "Any items placed curbside after residents' assigned free bulky item collection day will require a prepaid fee for servicing." This is a dated campaign, not a standing entitlement, and lapses at the end of October 2026. Source
  • Checked on 2026-09-29 for DeKalb County coverage. The Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta does reach DeKalb: its donation page states "The Furniture Bank's pickup area includes most of Cobb, Gwinnett, Fulton and DeKalb counties." The charity is already recorded for its acceptance terms and its collection arrangements under its Cobb, Gwinnett and Fulton entries; the fact established here is coverage only — DeKalb is one of the four counties named, and "most of" is the charity's own hedge, so a particular DeKalb address is not guaranteed. It is the only donation route in the county that takes bedding at all, and it collects rather than accepting drop-offs. Source

  • Ask what the total will be. Box springs, stairs, and extra items are often charged separately.
  • Check you qualify. Many sites serve only residents of their own city or county.
