2City curbside pickup in Clarkston

Clarkston’s own collection service takes the mattress from outside your home. You normally have to book a date in advance and follow their wrapping rules.

Clarkston Public Works special pick-up of bulky items (mattresses named)

destination not stated

Households in the City of Clarkston, Georgia, which arranges its own collection (Waste Pro for refuse, Lathem Home Sanitation for recycling, Public Works for bulky items and yard waste). Clarkston is not among the cities DeKalb County's Solid Waste Management serves, so DeKalb's curbside bulky collection does not apply here.

Conditions and source

"When we say bulky waste, we mean sofas, chairs, mattresses, washers, dryers, and other household goods." Collected on Mondays, the resident's service day, by Public Works, not by Waste Pro; "You must submit a request to City Hall by the Wednesday (3pm) prior" to the Monday pickup (City Hall 404-296-6489, or Public Works Director Marcus Seaton, mseaton@cityofclarkston.com), with items "at your curb before 7am on Mondays". Single bulky items are picked up by Public Works, and "You may be charged additionally if you need multiple items". Price list ("cost per item"): mattress/box spring twin $60, full/queen $75, king $100; a large-volume request is priced by management. Items containing Freon, and construction materials, are refused. Refuse put out early, before 5 p.m. on the Sunday, is collected by Public Works and invoiced to the resident. Code Sec. 19-73(9) authorizes the on-call, special-fee collection of discarded furniture.

  • $60 — Twin mattress/box spring, from the City's "2023 Clarkston Public Works Special Pick-Up Fee" list ("Mattress/Box Spring - Twin $60.00", headed "cost per item"). Whether a mattress and its box spring are charged separately is not stated.
  • $75 — Full or queen mattress/box spring ("Mattress/Box Spring - Full/Queen $75.00"). Whether a mattress and its box spring are charged separately is not stated.
  • $100 — King mattress/box spring ("Mattress/Box Spring - King $100.00"). Whether a mattress and its box spring are charged separately is not stated.

Not confirmed: The price list has one line per size for 'Mattress/Box Spring'; whether a mattress and its box spring are charged once or twice is not stated.

Not confirmed: The price list is titled 2023 and is not dated on the Sanitation page; whether it has been revised is not stated.

Not confirmed: How the fee is paid is not stated.

Not confirmed: No disposal or recycling outcome is stated.

Nearest

Seminole Road Landfill — household self-haul

4203 Clevemont Road, Ellenwood, GA 30294 · 3 miles away · disposal

No residency rule is published on either the fee sheet or the bulky-item page; the department calls Seminole Road its "Public disposal facility" and offers it as a "Self-haul option for residents", while describing its Central, East and North transfer stations as commercial disposal sites. The animal crematory on the same fee sheet does distinguish DeKalb residents from non-residents, so the county knows how to write a residency rule and has not written one for the landfill gate.

Conditions and source

4203 Clevemont Road, Ellenwood, GA 30294, 404-687-4040. Open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Charging is by weight at the scale, not per item: municipal disposal is $95.00 a ton and the minimum scale fee is $48.00 for any material up to 999 pounds, so one mattress costs $48 unless it travels with a heavier load. Construction and demolition material, yard trimmings, trees, inert materials, industrial and commercial waste are all $95 a ton. Residential tires are $10 each and no commercial tires are taken; an appliance containing Freon is $48. Asbestos and large animals carry a $200 hole-preparation charge plus tonnage. The county's own bulky-item page points households here as the alternative to a fee-based curbside collection, noting "Pay-per-weight pricing" and that construction materials are accepted.

Not confirmed: The $48 minimum comes from the county's April 2026 fee sheet; the bulky-item page cites a gate minimum of $16.50 and $99.80 per ton in its dead-animal paragraph. The two are not reconciled anywhere on the county site.

Not confirmed: No mattress-specific rate is published, and nothing says whether bedding is recycled; a landfill gate implies disposal and no recovery is claimed.

"Home mattresses and box springs" are charged "$15 TWIN/FULL; $18 QUEEN/KING PER MATTRESS OR BOX SPRING", the same for residents and businesses, and the page links a "MATTRESS RECYCLING VIDEO". The same non-profit's mattress post, recorded for CHaRM Atlanta, accepts spring mattresses only and refuses foam, foam toppers and wet or heavily soiled mattresses.

  • $15 — Twin and full mattresses and box springs, each, at CHaRM DeKalb ("$15 TWIN/FULL ... PER MATTRESS OR BOX SPRING"); the same for residents and businesses. Appointment required.

Roswell Transfer Station mattress drop-off

1810 Hembree Road, Alpharetta, GA 30009 · 18 miles away · destination not stated

Open to residents and non-residents for non-construction material: "As of July 1, 2025, the Roswell Transfer Station accepts non-construction materials from both residents and non-residents." The rate turns on residence: "Proof of residence within Roswell city limits is required to receive resident rates." Construction and demolition material is taken from Roswell residents only and is "currently not accepted from non-residents".

The last date published for this was Jul 1, 2025, so it has passed.

Conditions and source

The Non-Construction Waste Fee Schedule effective July 1, 2025 groups "Boxspring, Couch, Mattress" together, free to a Roswell resident and "$20 Each" to a non-resident. Bagged trash is free to residents and $3 per bag otherwise; lamps, rugs and vacuums free or $10 each; ordinary furniture free or $15 each. Hours are "Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m." at 1810 Hembree Road, Alpharetta, GA 30009. Not accepted: hazardous waste (anti-freeze, gasoline, lighter fluid, pesticides, propane tanks), yard waste (grass clippings, mulch, rocks, sand, tree limbs) and recyclables (appliances, cardboard, electronics, household batteries, lawn mowers, oil, metal, paint, tires). Roswell residents are directed to city household hazardous waste events and to the Roswell Recycling Center for those categories instead.

  • $0 — "Free" for a Roswell resident: the Non-Construction Waste Fee Schedule effective July 1, 2025 lists "Boxspring, Couch, Mattress" at a resident fee of Free and "Proof of residence within Roswell city limits is required to receive resident rates." Open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • $20 — "$20 Each" non-resident fee for "Boxspring, Couch, Mattress" under the same fee schedule effective July 1, 2025, since non-construction material has been accepted from non-residents as well as residents since July 1, 2025. A mattress and box spring would therefore be $40.00 for a household outside the Roswell city limits.

Not confirmed: The page does not state what form of proof of residence is accepted, nor any load limit on a resident's free drop-off.

Not confirmed: The page does not say what becomes of a mattress after drop-off, so the outcome is not established as recycling.

Not confirmed: No weekend hours are published.

6Donation options in Clarkston

Most charities will not take a used mattress. These are the ones we checked, including the ones that say no.

  • The Salvation Army (satruck.org): accepted-items list includes 'Mattresses' and beds; also says local ordinances and need vary by location and to call 1-800-SA-TRUCK to confirm what a local center accepts. Source
  • Doesn’t take mattresses. Habitat for Humanity national ReStore guide: 'Mattresses and box springs are not accepted.' Source

Policies vary by branch. Call before you carry one over — we asked each of the big three directly: Goodwill, the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity.

What Clarkston itself says

What we established about this city in particular — including where it runs nothing of its own and residents have to look elsewhere.

  • Clarkston's Sanitation page: "Starting April 30, 2024, Waste Pro will be our new sanitation service provider"; "Refuse (regular household trash) is picked up on Mondays, except for Holidays" (2026 holidays with no service: January 1, July 4, November 26, December 31); carts go out "the night before your collection day", but "No refuse should be placed at the street for pickup until 5:00 PM on the Sunday prior to the Monday pickup. (City Ordinance Article 5, Sec. 19-73)". "Any refuse placed at the street for pickup by Waste Management before the weekend is subject to collection by Public Works. The resident at the location will receive an invoice covering the cost when this special pickup is required." The page repeats that Public Works handles yard waste and bulk items as special pickups by prior arrangement with Marcus Seaton. Source Not confirmed: The page does not restate how a bulky-item pickup is booked beyond contacting Public Works; the booking rules are on the separate Yard Waste/Bulk Items page.
  • Clarkston's code, Chapter 19 (Utilities and Services), Sec. 19-73(9): "Inoperative, privately used or worn out household appliances (refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, dryers, discarded furniture) will be collected at the curb on an on-call and special fee basis to the department." So the code authorizes a fee for discarded furniture and the City's price list sets one. Sec. 19-73(5): refuse goes out "at or before 8:00 a.m. or prior to the arrival of the sanitation truck; this placement shall not be made before 5:00 p.m. on the day prior to collection day"; anything left after the crew has gone is "at the peril of the owner", and the owner is "subject to prosecution" if the street is littered. Sec. 19-73(6): containers removed "not later than 7:00 p.m. on the day the contents are emptied". Sec. 19-74(f): a commercial container holding furniture or bed springs is not emptied. Sec. 19-53(a): "It shall be unlawful for any person to dump or to cause to be dumped any garbage, refuse, litter, junk, appliances, equipment ... anywhere in the city except as may be permitted by city regulations"; dumped material that can be traced to a person is prima facie evidence against that person (19-53(c)). Sec. 19-52(b): no one not licensed by the city may collect and haul refuse other than their own. Sec. 19-78: collection fees "shall be as established by action of the city council". Source Not confirmed: Sec. 19-73 puts the curb time at 5 p.m. the day before, while the City's page puts it at 5 p.m. on the Sunday before a Monday collection; these agree for a Monday route and no conflict was found. Not confirmed: No penalty figure appears in the Chapter 19 sections read; the litter chapter (23) supplies one.
  • Clarkston's Litter Control chapter (Chapter 23, adopted December 5, 2023) makes dumping litter on public or private property a violation. Sec. 23-13 sets the penalty: "By a fine of not less than two hundred fifty dollars ($250.00) and not more than one thousand dollars ($1,000.00)", plus reimbursing the City "for the reasonable cost of removing the litter", plus, at the court's discretion, clean-up of any litter the person deposited on a public street or any public or private property, and the court may publish the names of those convicted. Source Not confirmed: Whether Sec. 23-13's minimum applies to an abandoned mattress as 'litter' rather than under Chapter 19 was not tested against any published case or City notice.
  • Not an option: Goodwill of North Georgia's "Items We Do and Don't Accept" page lists "Mattresses" and "Box springs" under "ITEMS WE CANNOT ACCEPT". A used mattress will be turned away. Source

What DeKalb County offers

Established for the county as a whole, so it applies across Clarkston and its neighbors.

  • For the month of October 2026 only, DeKalb County will collect a mattress from the curb free and without a request. Its Fall 2026 SWEEP frequently-asked-questions sheet describes the Solid Waste Environmental Enhancement Program as including "free curbside residential bulky item collection", running "The entire month of October", with "Bulky item collection will occur within DSWM's entire service area" — that is, unincorporated DeKalb and the eight cities the department serves, not Doraville. Mattresses are named among the accepted items: "Furniture (chairs, tables, sofas, mattresses, dressers, cabinets); appliances...; electronics...; other items such as lawn mowers...; lawn furniture; toys; bicycles; toilets; playground equipment." Refused are riding lawn mowers, pianos, auto parts, household hazardous waste, medical waste, tires and special collection items. No booking is needed: "Items at the curb will automatically be collected, based on the schedule above." The schedule follows the household's normal service day — Monday customers Oct. 2 or 3, Tuesday customers Oct. 9 or 10, Wednesday customers Oct. 16 or 17, Thursday customers Oct. 23 or 24 — with items put out on the Thursday of the week they are served, in an accessible spot clear of hydrants and mailboxes. The sheet closes the loophole a reader might hope for: "Any items placed curbside after residents' assigned free bulky item collection day will require a prepaid fee for servicing." This is a dated campaign, not a standing entitlement, and lapses at the end of October 2026. Source
  • Checked on 2026-09-29 for DeKalb County coverage. The Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta does reach DeKalb: its donation page states "The Furniture Bank's pickup area includes most of Cobb, Gwinnett, Fulton and DeKalb counties." The charity is already recorded for its acceptance terms and its collection arrangements under its Cobb, Gwinnett and Fulton entries; the fact established here is coverage only — DeKalb is one of the four counties named, and "most of" is the charity's own hedge, so a particular DeKalb address is not guaranteed. It is the only donation route in the county that takes bedding at all, and it collects rather than accepting drop-offs. Source

What to check before you go

  • Say if the mattress is wet, stained, or has any sign of pests — that is the usual reason one is turned away.
  • Ask what the total will be. Box springs, stairs, and extra items are often charged separately.
  • Check you qualify. Many sites serve only residents of their own city or county.
