Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress β 6 Years Old
About the Helix Midnight Luxe
Helix is known for their "sleep quiz" approach β you take a quiz about your sleep preferences and body type, and they recommend a specific mattress from their lineup. The Midnight is their recommendation for side sleepers who want a medium feel. The "Luxe" version is their upgraded model with a pillow top and extra height.
Helix is part of 3Z Brands, the same company that owns Brooklyn Bedding, Bear Mattress, and Leesa. They've been around since 2015 and have built a solid reputation in the bed-in-a-box space.
At around $1,400-2,000 for a Queen, the Midnight Luxe is positioned as a premium option. I wanted to see if the construction justifies that price β especially for side sleepers who need good shoulder and hip relief.
The Cover & Pillow Top
The "Luxe" in the name refers to the pillow top layer β a quilted cushion sewn into the top of the mattress. This adds about 2 inches of additional cushioning compared to the standard Helix Midnight.
Helix offers two cover options:
- TENCEL Cover β Breathable fabric that wicks moisture
- GlacioTex Cooling Cover β Upgrade option for active cooling
The pillow top is substantial β not just a thin quilted layer for marketing. There's real cushioning in there with about 2 inches of polyfoam built into the cover. The stitching is tight and well-done. This is the kind of plush top layer that side sleepers need for shoulder and hip cushioning. At 6 years old though, the pillow top was noticeably flatter than a new one β that extra plushness does wear down over time. Pillow tops are usually the first thing to go on these mattresses.
Body Impressions Check
Checking the surface for body impressions
Before cutting this mattress open, I checked for signs of wear. Body impressions are the most common issue with memory foam mattresses β the foam compresses where you sleep and doesn't bounce back.
The surface was relatively flat with minimal visible impressions. The pillow top showed some normal wear but no significant indentations. This is a good sign β it means the foam density is adequate for the job.
How It Feels
The Helix Midnight Luxe is designed specifically for side sleepers. Side sleeping puts pressure on your shoulders and hips, so you need a mattress that cushions these areas while still supporting your spine.
This mattress delivers for side sleepers. When lying on my side, I could feel the pillow top and memory foam conforming to my shoulder and hip. There's enough give to relieve pressure, but the coils underneath prevent you from sinking too deep. My wife found it comfortable with good alignment. The medium feel (around 6-6.5 out of 10) is well-suited for side sleeping.
Edge Support
Edge support matters for couples who use the full width of the mattress and for anyone who sits on the edge of the bed.
The Helix Midnight Luxe has good edge support for a memory foam hybrid. The pocketed coil system includes reinforced coils around the perimeter. When sitting on the edge, there's compression but it's controlled. Sleeping near the edge felt secure β no feeling like I was going to roll off. This is better edge support than you'd get from an all-foam mattress.
Inside: The Layer Construction
The Helix Midnight Luxe cut open, showing all the layers
Here's what's inside the Helix Midnight Luxe:
Layer 1: Quilted Pillow Top Cover (2")
The top is a quilted cover with about 2 inches of polyfoam built in. This creates the pillow top feel and provides initial cushioning.
Layer 2: Memory Foam (2")
Testing the foam layers for resilience
Below the pillow top is 2 inches of memory foam. This is the main comfort layer that provides pressure relief and body contouring. In the 2025 version, Helix upgraded this to 4.0 PCF density foam (from 2.5 PCF), which should improve durability.
Layer 3: Transition Foam (1")
A 1-inch layer of transitional polyfoam prevents you from feeling the coils directly and helps transfer weight to the support system below.
Layer 4: Pocketed Coil System
The support layer features up to 1,000 individually wrapped pocketed coils. These provide support, airflow, and motion isolation. The coils are reinforced around the edges and in the lumbar zone for extra support where you need it.
Layer 5: DuraDense Foam Base
At the bottom is Helix's DuraDense foam base, which provides structural integrity and durability for the entire mattress.
The total comfort layer thickness is about 5 inches, which is thicker than average. The memory foam felt appropriately dense β not the cheap, light foam you find in budget mattresses. The coil system is solid with good gauge steel and noticeable reinforcement around the edges. The zoned support in the lumbar area is a nice touch for spinal alignment. However, at 6 years old the memory foam had lost some of its responsiveness β it was slower to bounce back than new foam. This is typical memory foam degradation. The coils were still in good shape, which is what you want to see in a hybrid.
Fiberglass Check
Helix does not use fiberglass in any of their mattresses. They use alternative fire barriers to meet federal flame retardant requirements.
No Fiberglass
Helix Midnight Luxe does not contain fiberglass.
All Helix mattresses are CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold certified, which confirms low chemical emissions and no harmful substances.

Where Midnight Luxe Fits in the Helix Lineup
Helix makes several mattresses targeting different sleep preferences:
- Helix Sunset β Softest option, for side sleepers who want plush
- Helix Midnight β Medium, the bestseller for side sleepers
- Helix Dusk β Medium, balanced for combination sleepers
- Helix Twilight β Medium-firm, for back sleepers
- Helix Dawn β Firm, for stomach sleepers
The "Luxe" versions add a pillow top and extra height. The Midnight Luxe is the side sleeper's choice with the premium pillow top treatment.
The Helix Midnight Luxe does what it sets out to do β provide a comfortable sleep surface for side sleepers. The 5-inch comfort layer with the plush pillow top delivers good pressure relief for shoulders and hips.
The construction is solid. The pocketed coil system with reinforced edges and lumbar support is well-designed. The memory foam density is appropriate for longevity. I'd expect this mattress to last 8-10 years with proper care.
The main limitation is that this is specifically designed for side sleepers with a medium feel. If you sleep on your stomach or want a firm mattress, look at other options in the Helix lineup or elsewhere.
If you're a side sleeper looking for a memory foam hybrid with a plush pillow top, the Helix Midnight Luxe is a strong choice. The construction quality justifies the price point.
